We all talk about a healthy lifestyle, but what is a healthy lifestyle? Is it eating right or exercising or your thought process? What is right for you, and how will you know? You know the old saying, ” What is good for the goose is not always good for the gander.” What is suitable for someone else may not be a healthy lifestyle for you.

Let’s take a closer look at these statements. First, let’s start with the question, “What is a healthy lifestyle?”

You can do everything right in one area, but unless you incorporate all of your mind and body as a whole, you can not achieve a healthy lifestyle. To be healthy means, you enjoy good health and are free from disease. OK, that is good, but how do you stay free from a disease so you can remain healthy?

Lifestyle is the way you typically live your life. So a healthy lifestyle is the ability to stay free from disease in the way you live your life. It seems contradictory because maybe you are not leading your life in a manner that will keep you free from disease.

What will it take to have a typical life that will keep you healthy and have the longevity of life?

Have heard the term, “happy wife, happy life.” This phrase can relate to our mind and how it affects our bodies. In this saying, when the significant person in your life is happy, then you, too, can enjoy the benefits of living with them.

When you keep your mind positive, then your body can enjoy the benefits because a happy brain decreases cortisol, which in turn causes the brain to produce serotonin. Normal levels of serotonin create a euphoric feeling of well-being. And in turn, you are calmer, feel happier, and more focused.

Along with a healthy mind comes nutrition to fuel it and keep your body at a safe weight. Have you seen the Food Pyramid introduced by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), that says what you need to eat to stay healthy? I have to say that at one time in my life, many years ago I attempted to eat all of those foods. I gained weight and decided that overweight was more unhealthy and went back to my satisfying junk food.

Your body needs proper nutrition for the cells to communicate and work properly. Any imbalance of micronutrients or macronutrients can throw off our perfect rhythm. Somewhere in all the nutrition suggestions, you have to find a balance of foods that work well with your unique body type.

Aww, yes, exercise. For some, this is a dreaded word that conjures up all kinds of unpleasant thoughts, but for others, it is a daily routine.

Exercise will give you a feeling of well-being and happiness while it helps you lose weight. Your muscles and bones become stronger to support your internal organs and build your energy level. It will promote better sleep that will, in turn, decrease the risk of chronic diseases and promote a healthy memory.

Exercise fuels your body with oxygen, which in turn helps to promote a positive mind and helps the nutrition you take in to metabolize correctly. But what is the exercise you need? Do you have to work out hard seven days a week to promote health?

It sounds like a daunting process when you look at the whole picture in one gulp. But a healthy lifestyle is a process by which we change one thing at a time. We start low and go high.

The world around us is one big negative glob of news and naysayers. You don’t have to be like them. You can wash your mind in positive affirmations daily. Changing the way you think is the beginning of a new you.

I used to be a negative person. Even today, it is a mild struggle. But I found ways to alter my thinking. The obvious is proper nutrition and a more active lifestyle. But the road to all of that is through your mind. When you believe in you, then your body will follow suit.

How you process the world around you is encoded into your DNA. Are you a clam person, or do you have social anxiety? Are you intrinsically or extrinsically motivated?

In the massive world of the internet, we can find positive quotes, videos, and scriptures anywhere. Pick your favorite to learn and head over to your favorite browser on your phone or PC. On Youtube, you can search for anything that washes your mind. Scripture reading with soothing music in the background. Or a voice reading quotes with calming background sounds. The world is at your feet.

When I chose to change my mindset, my favorite method was to find a quote a day put it on the mirror, and repeat it over and over as I went about my morning routine. With time my mind moved away from the negative, and I began to think of myself as accomplished and energetic. With my new thought process, all things in life began to fall into place.

Our society is in the fast-food and quick junk food mode. Life is so busy with children and work and now with the world in such turmoil. So how can you have nutritious eating habits?

Like I mentioned earlier, you have to start low and move high—Cut out one thing at a time. For me, it began with Diet Mountain Dew. I had drunk that nasty stuff for 30 years. No water, just Diet Mountain Dew. When I stopped drinking it, that was all I could accomplish for a couple of months. Then I moved onto another part of my nutrient habits and changed one thing at a time.

My suggestion for you is to start with one bad habit and move on from there. Like if you eat cookies in the evening when you sit down to relax, replace it with a piece of fruit. Continue this until your body adjusts and moves on from there.

Or if you like to eat out a lot then choose healthy food. Ask the waiter to bring a to-go-box and box half of your food before you begin to eat. Keep your intake to more natural foods and smaller proportions. It is the little things that add up.

Then when you feel comfortable with that, begin to look at the nutrients in your food. See, it is a process that will get you to a more nutritious lifestyle.

I know you have heard that any exercise is good, even the small stuff like parking the car far away from the door and walking into work. These do make a difference. The key is consistency and persistence. The one or two times that you think “I don’t have time for that” may cause a feeling of defeat. Defeat will rob you of success.

Maybe you do work out frequently and just don’t feel like it is doing any good. Did you know your body has a specific style of exercise encoded in your genes? Yep, it’s true. Maybe you just need to tweak your workout a bit.

The way to improve your exercise and activity are endless. But it is a positive mindset and removing the junk from your body that will help you see success. All three work together to produce a healthy lifestyle.

There is a lifestyle that is unique to each individual encoded in your DNA. The strands of genes that you are born with can help you change and improve.

What you do doesn’t always have anything to do with the outcome. It is, however, related to your body’s needs. Your DNA will tell you how you absorb nutrients, what proportion of protein, carbohydrates, and fats is optimal for your health.

Supportive Nutrition
